    Why You'll Love This Treat

It's a fun, unique and delicious treat!

This dessert is super easy to make.

It takes about 5 minutes to whip up!

You only need a few ingredients that you probably already have on hand.

This is a fun treat to make for yourself or serve at a party!

It's easy to make gluten free and dairy free.

This treat is fun for St. Patty's Day!

    What is Affogato?

Affogato means "drowned" in Italian. It is an Italian coffee-based dessert featuring a scoop of gelato or ice cream topped with a hot shot of espresso. The contrasting temperatures and flavors create a delightful treat - the hot espresso melts the ice cream slightly, infusing it with coffee flavor, while the cold ice cream cools down the espresso. In this fun twist, I used matcha instead of espresso!

    Equipment Needed

All you need to make this matcha affogato is an ice cream scooper, ice cream dish, matcha bowl and matcha whisk.

    Ingredients Needed

Water: I always used filtered water for my matcha. I love my Aqua Tru!

Matcha: My favorite matcha is Pique Matcha because it is organic, ceremonial grade and quadruple tested for toxins. I like to use a high-quality matcha because it tastes the best! Matcha has so many health benefits.

Ice Cream: I like to use vanilla bean ice cream for this matcha affogato but feel free to use any flavor you desire. If you are dairy free, you can use dairy free ice cream. I like the brands Cosmic Bliss and Nadamoo. I am dairy free but I made this one for my fiancé so I used regular vanilla ice cream!

Toppings: Toppings are completely optional but so fun! I put sprinkles and mini chocolate chips on this matcha affogato.

    Step-By-Step Instructions

    Step 1: Gather your ingredients.

Step 2: In the matcha bowl, combine hot water with matcha powder using matcha whisk.

Step 3: Scoop ice cream into bowl.

Step 4: Pour matcha over ice cream.

Step 5: Add toppings, if desired!

    Storage

If you do not finish this matcha affogato, feel free to store it in the freezer, but it will change the texture. I recommend just eating it right after making it!

    Variations

There are so many different ways to make this matcha affogato!

Ice Cream: Go beyond vanilla and try other flavors like chocolate, chocolate chip, mint chip or even fruity options like mango or strawberry!

Toppings: Try adding whipped cream, chocolate shavings, cacao powder, caramel, chopped nuts, crushed cookies or fruit sauce!

Tea: Switch up the tea! Try out chai or a floral herbal tea. You could even try half matcha half espresso!

Layers: Try out layering a base of fruit at the bottom of the ice cream dish!

    How to Serve

This matcha affogato can be served as a dessert or a fun snack. It's such a fun dessert to whip up when you're having a sweet tooth or to serve at a party.

I love to add fun toppings like sprinkles, caramel, hot chocolate, whipped cream, fruit or nuts!

    Recipe FAQs

    What flavor is affogato?

Affogato means "drowned" in Italian. It is an Italian coffee-based dessert featuring a scoop of gelato or ice cream topped with a hot shot of espresso. I used matcha instead of espresso here!

What flavor pairs well with matcha?

I love pairing vanilla ice cream with matcha, but chocolate also pairs well!

    What does matcha taste like?

High-quality matcha has a natural sweetness, but it's subtle and not overpowering. There's a slight bitterness present, but it's pleasant and not harsh.

Are you supposed to eat or drink an affogato?

An affogato is traditionally eaten with a spoon!

What is the difference between affogato and ice cream?

The hot matcha melts the ice cream slightly, infusing it with matcha flavor, while the cold ice cream cools down the matcha. It is a unique experience!

What ice cream is good for affogato?

I love using vanilla ice cream for this matcha affogato but feel free to use any flavor you love!

What if I don't have a matcha whisk?

If you don't have a matcha whisk you can use a frother or blender. You can also mix it with a spoon.

How can I find high-quality matcha?

Look for a vibrant, deep green color. Think "jade green" for ceremonial grade matcha. Duller greens, browns or yellows indicate lower quality or older matcha. Good matcha should also have a pleasant smell and a complex flavor profile. Expect a smooth, slightly sweet taste with a hint of bitterness and a pleasant umami aftertaste. Lower quality matcha can be overly bitter, grassy or even have a fishy taste.
