    Storage

Now that you know how to make oat flour, here's how to store it! Homemade oat flour is simple to store, but because it's made from whole oats that still contain natural oils, it can go rancid faster than store-bought flour.

Here's my suggestion based on my experience at home:

    1. Short-term (up to 1 month): Keep it in an airtight container (like a glass jar or plastic container with a tight lid). Store in a cool, dark cupboard away from heat, light and moisture.

    2. Long-term (up to 3-6 months): Store the flour in the fridge in an airtight container. This slows down oxidation and keeps the product fresh for longer.

    3. Very long-term (6+ months): Freeze in a sealed freezer-safe bag or container. You can scoop out the amount you need without thawing the whole batch.

I like to label the container with the date I made it. Give it a quick sniff before using; if it smells off or slightly nutty/rancid, throw it out. Stirring or sifting before use can help break up clumps if the product has been stored for a while.

    Recipe FAQ

How do you make oat flour?

Simply grind rolled oats or quick oats in a high-speed blender, food processor or coffee grinder until you get a fine, powdery flour. Sift if you want a lighter texture.

Is oat flour just grinded up oats?

Pretty much, yes! It's just oats blended to a smooth flour.

    Is oat flour gluten free?

Yes, but the product must state that it's certified gluten free on the packaging!

Can I change all purpose flour to oat flour?

Yes and no. Oat flour behaves differently than wheat flour because oats have no gluten. So, with baked goods, they tend to come out more dense and crumbly. You usually can't swap 1:1 without adjusting liquid, eggs or adding a binder like xanthan gum.

What can I use oat flour in?

I use oat flour in muffins like these Pumpkin Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins!

What kind of oats can be turned into flour?

Rolled oats, old-fashioned oats or quick oats all work. Steel-cut oats can be ground too, but may need extra processing for a fine flour.

How much flour will my oats yield?

Roughly 1 cup of oats makes about 3/4 cup of oat flour.

How long does oat flour last?

Stored in an airtight container, oat flour lasts up to 1 month at room temperature, 3-6 months in the fridge and 6+ months in the freezer.
