I used store bought pesto, but you can also use my homemade pesto recipe. This recipe is perfect for those of us who are craving comfort foods but don’t want to trigger our histamine symptoms! It is also gluten free, dairy free and egg free! My favorite Friday night consists of pizza and a movie night. Using a pizza crust mix for convenience, this pizza is ready in no time!
What Is Low Histamine?
Low histamine refers to a diet that limits foods high in histamine or those that can trigger the release of histamine in the body. Histamine is a chemical naturally produced by the body, and when it’s in excess, it can cause allergy-like symptoms.
People with histamine intolerance may experience symptoms such as:
- Headaches
- Migraines
- Digestive issues (ex. diarrhea, nausea, bloating)
- Skin reactions (ex. hives, itching)
- Respiratory symptoms (ex. runny nose, sneezing)
By following a low histamine diet, individuals with histamine intolerance can potentially manage their symptoms and improve their overall quality of life. This diet should only be done under the guidance of a doctor or nutritionist. When I first started the diet, I used the SIGHI list.

Equipment Needed
All you need to make this low histamine pizza is a baking sheet, mixing bowl, measuring cups and spoons and a mixing spoon.
Ingredients Needed
Pizza Crust Mix: I like to use Simple Mills pizza crust mix for this recipe, but feel free to use any pizza mix that you know you tolerate. You will also need any ingredients that the mix calls for. In this case, the mix calls for olive oil, apple cider vinegar and water. I used lemon instead because I didn’t have any apple cider vinegar on hand. I eat a lower histamine diet and I am able to tolerate some lemon, but do what works for you!
Sauce: I used a combination of my nomato sauce and pesto for this low histamine pizza. I used a store bought pesto that I tolerate! If you are looking for a homemade pesto, try out this one!
Vegetables: I used artichoke, onion and broccoli as toppings for my pizza. Use any vegetables that you know you tolerate!
Protein: I used rotisserie chicken as the protein for this meal. Feel free to use any meat that works for you! I know everyone is different but I am able to tolerate leftovers for a few days. You might be able to tolerate a fresh rotisserie chicken that was purchased the same day. You know your body best.

Store this pizza in an airtight container in the refrigerator. If you do not tolerate leftovers you can freeze the pizza as well! Freezing food prevents histamine build up.
Variations
Crust: I used Simple Mills boxed crust. You can also make a fresh low histamine crust.
Sauces: The lowest histamine option is to make your own sauces fresh and include lots of garlic and olive oil. I know that is not always possible, so finding a store bought pesto you tolerate can be helpful.
Protein: I used rotisserie chicken here, but you can also make shredded chicken breasts.
Vegetables: I used artichokes, broccoli and onion. Try adding other low histamine vegetables like zucchini, asparagus or carrots.
Cheese: Fresh cheeses such as mozzarella, ricotta cheese and mascarpone are rated as low histamine. Feel free to use those if you can tolerate dairy. I use dairy free cheese on my pizzas because I have a dairy allergy.
How to Serve
Serve this low histamine pizza with a side salad packed with fresh vegetables! I love making these for a movie night or bring with me when my friends are having a pizza night! I know that it can be hard to feel included when you have to eat low histamine and this pizza is a great way to enjoy a fun comfort food. My fiancé also loves this one and eats it with me!
