This Shepherd's Pie Mason Jar Meal Prep is hands down one of the best meal preps I've ever made. It is the perfect cozy comfort meal and I love how the layered jars look in my fridge. These jars are the perfect grab and go lunch or dinner. They are hearty, filling and come together in under 30 minutes!

I am always looking for ways to mix up my meal preps that aren't boring, especially as someone who has been eating gluten-free and dairy-free for 8+ years (more on my story here)! I also focus on making sure my meals have enough protein. This jar prep is the perfect combination of juicy ground beef, colorful veggies and creamy mashed potatoes.
I used coconut aminos in this recipe to keep this meal prep allergy-friendly and it gives it the best flavor. Trust me, you are going to want to make these every week this winter! If you are currently in meal planning and prepping mode, you have to also prep my Gluten-Free and Dairy-Free Ramen Jars (these also use coconut aminos) or my Gluten-Free and Dairy-Free Mason Jar Taco Salads! You will be so relieved to have these on hand for a busy week.
Ingredients

Ingredient Notes
Meat: Traditional Shepherd's Pie uses lamb, but a fun fact about me is that I've never had lamb in my life, so I decided to stick with ground beef for this one. You can use any ground meat you like though!
Vegetables: A shortcut for this is to use frozen mirepoix! No chopping involved. Great for those of us who are super busy or who have limited energy.
Sauce: I used coconut aminos in this recipe to make it soy-free. You can also use soy sauce if you prefer.
Potatoes: I just added some oil and spices to my potatoes because the meal is already so flavorful. If you want to take these jars to the next level and make the best dairy-free potatoes ever, try out my recipe!
Low histamine: To make this recipe lower in histamine, you can use ground turkey or ground chicken. I have always tolerated ground beef just fine, but I know that is not the case for everyone. Coconut aminos can also be higher in histamine, but the Bragg's coconut aminos are not fermented, which makes this product the lowest histamine option. If you are strict low histamine, I would skip the coconut aminos and add in some extra spices, broth, fresh herbs and/or maple syrup.
Equipment Notes
As someone who has dealt with chronic illness for the majority of my life, making non-toxic swaps has been essential throughout my health journey. Since I cook so much, I try to stick to non-toxic kitchen staples and storage containers. I love these glass jars with bamboo lids to help reduce our plastic exposure!

Variations
Meat: I used ground beef in this recipe, but feel free to substitute with ground chicken, turkey or lamb.
Potatoes: Swap out the regular potatoes for sweet potatoes instead! You can also try using cauliflower mash.
Toppings: Add cheese, fresh herbs or breadcrumbs to the top!
Sauce: I used coconut aminos, but you can also use soy sauce.

Tips & Tricks
Let the components cool before layering.
To ensure the jars hold up, I like to add my potatoes to the bottom, then meat and then vegetables.
Drizzle extra coconut aminos on the top for the best flavor!
These jars can be stored in the refrigerator in airtight containers for 4-5 days.
