Here’s a touch of fine dining with my Steak Frites recipe. I have been craving Steak Frites ever since I had them in Austin at the Well. They were so good. I had to recreate them at home. They used homemade chickpea fries, so I paired them with bagged chickpea fries for a similar flavor profile! This classic dish, a comforting steak with crispy fries, is one of my favorites. Can you believe the whole thing comes together in less than 30 minutes? It is so easy and is perfect for a nice family dinner, to serve at parties or even as a weeknight dinner. As a combination, perfectly cooked steak, crispy fries and chermoula sauce are pure bliss. This recipe is also dairy free and and there are endless varitions to make! Try it out for Valentine’s Day, Father’s Day or any summer dining event. You’ll feel like a serious home chef. Equipment Needed
I used a pan and an air fryer for this easy Steak Frites recipe.
Ingredients Needed
Fries: You’ll need a pack of your favorite fries. I love the chickpea fries from Actual Veggies.
Steaks: I recommend using ribeye, sirloin, New York strip or filet mignon, depending on your budget and personal preference for meat cuts. In terms of Steak Frites ingredients, getting the best quality meat is key to a delicious result. I love ordering my steak from ButcherBox because they have high-quality, grass-fed and grass-finished steak. Use code LAUREN for $30 off your first order!
Avocado oil: I love cooking with avocado oil because it has a high smoke point and simple, neutral flavor.
Garlic: Fresh garlic is best for these Steak Frites. It adds rich, aromatic flavor.
Rosemary: For a classic flavor.
Salt, garlic powder and pepper: Seasoning is key with this recipe. It makes all the difference, so don’t under season these Steak Frites!
What Is The Best Kind of Steak To Use?
For Steak Frites, I recommend cuts that cook quickly and come out juicy. In my experience, cuts like ribeye, sirloin, New York strip and filet mignon all work really well.
Each of these is super tasty! You can decide whether to go for well-done, medium or underdone steak.
Step By Step Instructions
Step 1. Get your ingredients together. Let your steak come to room temperature for a few minutes.
Step 2. Cook your fries according to the package instructions until they are lovely and crisp.
Step 3. Season the steak well with salt, pepper, rosemary and garlic powder.
Step 4. Heat the oil and garlic in a hot cast-iron pan. Cook the seasoned steak in the pan until it’s done perfectly to your liking.
Step 5. Serve your steak hot with a side of fries (frites). My favorite sauce for Steak Frites is this homemade Chermoula recipe.
Storage
I recommend cooking and eating your steak right away!
If you have leftover Steak Frites, they can be stored in the fridge in an airtight container and enjoyed for 2-3 days. Remember, the texture and crispness of the frites will not be the same when reheated.
I don’t recommend freezing leftovers, but if you have to, then freeze leftover steak and use it sliced as a filling for wraps and in salads.
Variations
My personal favorite is to serve these frites and steak with a dollop of my homemade and very fresh Chermoula Sauce. Chimichurri is tasty, too!
Make a version with sweet potatoes if you like a slightly sweeter batch of fries.
For a low histamine version of Steak Frites – use fresh, unaged steak and skip any aged sauces. A bowl of my Low Histamine Ketchup is ideal with your frites. Learn more about histamine sensitivities here on my blog.
Instead of frites, serve your steak with a lush green salad, loaded with all of your favorite crunchy greens.
How To Serve
There are so many ways to serve Steak Frites.
- As a special occasion main course for lunch or dinner – think birthdays, anniversaries and graduation celebrations.
- Make it for 2 as a romantic date night dinner with red wine if that’s your thing!
- With a side of green veggies like pan-fried asparagus, steamed green beans with slivered almonds and honeyed carrots.
Tips For Cooking Steak
Steak cooking time: How we like to cook and eat steak is pretty much according to personal preference. It also depends on the thickness of the steak cut. If you feel your steak is underdone, cook it an extra 1 minute per side before testing it again. Add another minute, per side, until you get it just right for you.
Let your meat come to room temperature before cooking it. This will give you a more evenly cooked piece of steak.
Let it rest! This is especially important if you want to slice it before serving it. Give it around 4 minutes before slicing it. This lets the meat stay nice and juicy.
Recipe FAQ
What cut of meat is steak frites?
Traditionally, steak frites is made with sirloin or rump steak in French restaurants, although there are loads of modern versions that use ribeye or filet mignon.
What is the difference between fries and frites?
French fries are usually a little thicker and softer inside. Frites, on the other hand, are generally cut a lot thinner and are fried twice for extra crispiness.
Can I make this low histamine?
Yup! Firstly, use a fresh steak that hasn’t been aged for a long time (aka is fresh) and steer clear of eating leftovers. Skip steaks that are darker and well-aged. Use olive oil as a “sauce” and serve Steak Frites with simple, low histamine sides like steamed veggies.
What sides are good with Steak Frites?
Try pairing steak frites with a side salad or a sheet pan of roasted veggies.
What sauce should I put on Steak Frites?
I love using chermoula, but feel free to try out chimichurri, peppercorn or bearnaise sauce. You could also pair it with stone ground mustard.
