Equipment Needed
To make this DIY edible arrangement you need a clear pitcher, bamboo skewers, toothpicks, a cutting board, a knife, a small bowl and assorted flower cookie cutters. I used these cookie cutters and these cookie cutters from Amazon.
Ingredients Needed
Fruit: To make this bouquet, I used several different fruits. For the base of the pitcher, I used green grapes and blueberries. I added both regular strawberries and chocolate covered strawberries. I made the fruit flowers out of cantaloupe, honeydew, pineapple, kiwi, watermelon, grapes and blueberries. You can use any type of fruit that you love, just make sure you are using a variety of fruit so that your bouquet is colorful!
Chocolate: I used dairy free dark chocolate to make chocolate covered strawberries.
Step-By-Step Instructions
Step 1: Gather your ingredients.
Step 2: Melt your chocolate. Make your chocolate covered strawberries first by dipping each strawberry in melted chocolate and putting them in the fridge until hardened.
Step 3: Cut fruit into approximately 1 inch slices.
Step 4: Use the flower cookie cutters to cut out a variety of flower shapes and centers.
Step 5: Fill the glass pitcher with green grapes.
Step 6: Assemble your fruit flowers by attaching the centers of the flowers to the flower with a toothpick.
Step 7: Poke each flower with long bamboo skewer and add grapes, blueberries or a mixture to make the “stem”.
Step 8: Place all flower skewers in the glass pitcher, add strawberries and chocolate covered strawberries and enjoy!
How to Select Ripe Fruit
Here are a few things to look for when selecting fruit:
Color: Look for fruit that has its characteristic vibrant color. Avoid fruit that is dull or has green patches (unless it’s supposed to be green!).
Feel: Most ripe fruit should be slightly soft or have a little give when pressed gently. However, some fruits like berries and grapes should be firm. Avoid fruit that is mushy or feels hard as a rock.
Weight: Pick up the fruit. Ripe fruit should feel heavy for its size.
Stem: The stem of the fruit should be fresh and green (unless it’s brown and supposed to be, like a fig). For some fruits, like pears and melons, a slight give at the stem end can indicate ripeness.
Smell: Most ripe fruit will have a pleasant fragrance. Sniff the stem end; that’s where the aroma is strongest.
Storage
This DIY edible arrangement is best consumed as soon as possible to ensure the fruit is fresh! It can be stored for 1-2 days in the refrigerator before serving though. Make sure it is covered thoroughly with plastic wrap to keep it fresh.
If the arrangement won’t be consumed entirely, place any leftover fruits back in the refrigerator, covered in an airtight container.
Variations
Fruit: The fruit options are endless! Try using raspberries, blackberries, peaches, nectarines, oranges, grapefruits, tangerines, mangoes and papayas if you want to switch things up!
Pitcher: You can use a clear pitcher or you can use a colored pitcher if you do not want to fill it up with grapes. You can also use a vase. Whatever you have on hand works!
Chocolate: I used dairy free dark chocolate to cover my strawberries. You can also use white chocolate. Adding sprinkles could also be fun!
Shapes: Feel free to add other fun shapes to your fruit bouquet. I added a butterfly and made the center of some of the flowers different shapes. Experiment with hearts, stars, circles or even animals!
Sizes: Feel free to make the flowers different sizes as well! I made some smaller flowers and some larger flowers.
Additions: Try incorporating non-fruit items like marshmallows, sprinkles, pretzels or cookies!
Vegetables: If you prefer, you can also use vegetables in this edible arrangement in addition to or instead of the fruit!
How to Serve
Ideally, take the edible arrangement out of the refrigerator 30 minutes to an hour before serving. This allows the fruits to reach room temperature for optimal flavor and texture.
Consider providing plates and forks and toothpicks for easy enjoyment!
Make sure your guests remove the toothpicks before eating.
Place the edible arrangement on a decorative platter or cake stand as a centerpiece for your table. Add candles or scattered flower petals for extra ambiance.
Offer a selection of dipping sauces like chocolate fondue, whipped cream or yogurt for added indulgence.
