This French onion chicken gnocchi is quite possibly one of my best creations. I am obsessed with anything French onion flavored from soup to pasta to proteins. I am also a huge lover of gnocchi, so I thought why not marry the two? The result is rich, savory and pillowy, plus there's protein so it's still a wholesome dinner option! This one took me a few tries to get the liquid ratio right, but the final result is French onion soup in pasta form. I've been making versions of French Onion everything for years and this spin is definitely my favorite yet.
If you love French onion, you'll also love my French onion chicken, French Onion pasta and French Onion soup!

Why You'll Love This French Onion Gnocchi
This dish is the perfect one pot meal. It's comforting, cozy and packed with flavor. It's ready in 30 minutes and makes for a great weeknight dinner that everyone will enjoy. You only need a handful of ingredients and you probably already have them on hand! Even a beginner cook can make this dish. It's that easy!
French Onion gnocchi is also super adaptable for any dietary needs, allergies or preferences. Use gluten-free gnocchi to make it gluten-free, skip the chicken to make it vegetarian, use coconut milk to make it dairy-free or use bone broth to increase the protein content.
Ingredients You'll Need

- Onions: The base of this recipe creating the caramelized onion flavor!
- Chicken: To add protein.
- Seasoning: I used thyme, salt and pepper.
- Broth: I used chicken broth, but you can use any kind of broth in this recipe.
- Coconut aminos: A soy-free option that gives this dish a rich flavor.
- Gnocchi: I used gluten-free gnocchi because I'm gluten-free!
- Coconut milk: Optional but makes this gnocchi super creamy.
Recipe Variations
- Protein: Swap the chicken for white beans, chickpeas, sausage or rotisserie chicken.
- Broth: I used chicken broth, but feel free to use beef broth or bone broth!
- Milk: I used coconut milk because I'm dairy-free, but if you tolerate dairy, feel free to use regular milk or half and half.
- Gnocchi: Try out potato gnocchi or cauliflower gnocchi. Use gluten-free gnocchi if you are gluten-free.
- Toppings: Add cheese and fresh herbs on top!
- Low histamine: For a lower histamine option, use homemade meat broth!

Recipe Tips
- Take your time caramelizing the onions! Rushing with high heat can lead to burnt onions.
- Avoid overcooking the gnocchi. Gnocchi only takes a few minutes to cook!
- Add an extra splash of broth if there is not enough liquid once you put the gnocchi in. Each type of gnocchi will be a little different!
Storage and Make Ahead Tips
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat on the stovetop or in the microwave! I would not recommend freezing this recipe!
If you are looking to prep this recipe to make ahead of time, caramelize the onions and cook the chicken and store it in the fridge until you are ready. Add the onions and chicken back into the pan and then follow the instructions to add in the remaining ingredients. You can also use shredded rotisserie chicken as a time or energy saving hack!
Recipe FAQs
If your gnocchi soaks up a lot of liquid, add another splash of coconut aminos and broth.
Remove some of the liquid from the pan or continue to let it cook off with the pan uncovered.
