    What Is a Big Mac?

The Big Mac is a hamburger sold by McDonald’s, distinguished by its two all-beef patties nestled between a three-piece sesame seed bun with an extra piece of bread in the middle. This burger is further enhanced by the addition of a creamy and tangy special sauce, along with a medley of crisp lettuce, onions, pickles and cheese, creating a flavor profile that has made it a symbol of American fast food culture. In this recipe, we are taking this flavor profile and giving it a more wholesome twist!

    Why You’ll Love This Recipe

    It’s so easy to make!

It is a more wholesome twist on an American fast food classic.

These Big Mac potato skins are perfect for game day or the Super Bowl!

    They are kid-friendly!

This recipe is gluten free, dairy free and easy to adapt.

    It is packed with flavor.

They also make a perfect weeknight dinner!

    Equipment Needed

All you need to make these Big Mac potato skins is a baking sheet, cutting board, knife and a pan.

    Ingredients Needed

Potatoes: I used russet potatoes. They are large and work best for this recipe!

Ground Beef: Ground beef makes up the bulk of the filling for these stuffed potatoes and also adds protein to this recipe!

Oil: I used avocado oil in this recipe to cook the ground beef and potatoes!

Salt: My favorite is Redmond’s Real Salt salt because it is high-quality and made with zero fillers. If you use my discount code LESSWITHLAUR you can get 15% off Redmond’s website.

Pepper: Pepper is used to add some flavor to the ground beef and potato.

Garlic Powder: This adds additional flavor to the ground beef!

Onion: I used sweet onion here! They provide a pleasant crunch and add some textural interest to the filling. Onions are essential to creating the Big Mac flavor profile.

Tomato: In Big Mac potato skins, tomatoes add a burst of fresh, juicy flavor and a touch of acidity to balance the richness of the beef.

Pickles: Add a tangy, briny flavor that cuts through the richness of the beef and cheese. They also provide a satisfying crunch and a touch of acidity, enhancing the overall flavor profile.

Lettuce: Adds a refreshing crunch and a touch of green to the potato skins.

Burger Sauce: It’s the creamy, tangy sauce that truly brings the Big Mac flavor to the dish.

Cheese: Cheese is optional here! Feel free to use dairy free cheese if you are dairy free. Personally, I think the burger sauce adds enough creaminess to this dish and cheese isn’t necessary!

    Step By Step Instructions

Step 1: Gather your ingredients and preheat the oven to 400°F.

Step 2: Pierce potatoes with a fork and place them on a baking sheet. Add oil, salt and pepper and bake for about 50 minutes.

Step 3: While potatoes are baking, cook ground beef seasoned with salt, pepper and garlic powder in an oiled pan over medium heat until lightly browned.

Step 4: Once potatoes are done and cooled, scoop out the insides.

Step 5: Add ground beef into the potatoes and cook for another 10 minutes.

Step 6: While the stuffed potatoes are cooking, chop the vegetables.

Step 7: Add onion, tomato, pickle, lettuce and burger sauce on top. Serve and enjoy!

    Storage

Store these Big Mac potato skins in an airtight container for 4-5 days. These also make a great meal prep for lunch or dinner.

    Variations

Potato: I used russet potatoes in this recipe but you can also try using sweet potatoes.

Meat: I used ground beef in this recipe, but you can also swap it out and try ground turkey or ground chicken.

Toppings: I used onion, tomato, lettuce, pickles and burger sauce on these potato skins. You could also try adding hot sauce, jalapeño, bacon bits, avocado, cheese or ranch!

Sauce: I used store bought burger sauce for this recipe, but you could also make your own. An easy way to do this is to mix together ketchup and mayo.

Seasoning: I used salt and pepper as seasoning, but feel free to add chili powder for some spice!

    How to Serve

Here are some ideas on how to serve your Big Mac potato skins:

    For a Casual Gathering:

    • Buffet Style: Arrange the potato skins on a large platter or baking sheet and let guests help themselves. Provide bowls of toppings like shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, chopped pickles and extra special sauce for them to add. Serve them as part of your game day spread!

    For a More Formal Occasion:

    • Individual Plates: Serve each potato skin on its own plate, garnished with a sprig of fresh parsley or a cherry tomato.
    • Appetizer Course: Offer the potato skins as an elegant appetizer before a larger meal.

These Big Mac potato skins are best served warm!
